When and where

  • Hours: 11 AM to 4 PM

  • Check-in: Winchester Thurston School, 455 Morewood Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA 15213

  • Weather: The tour proceeds rain or shine

Show your ticket at check-in. Then move through the tour in any order you like.

What you will see

This year’s tour includes seven private Shadyside homes and Shadyside Presbyterian Church.

The houses span the neighborhood’s range of architecture — from near-original historic residences to a contemporary home — with friendly docents at each stop. A flow is in place at every house for comfort, and some rooms may be off-limits.

Most guests spend two to three hours. Take as much or as little time as you wish.

Parking

Park once near check-in, then ride the trolleys or walk.

On Saturday, October 3 only, the City will not ticket in the two permit zones around Winchester Thurston:

  • Zone U

  • Zone J

In those two zones that day, you may park even if the sign says 2-hour parking. You can ignore the two-hour limit in Zone U and Zone J for the tour.

This applies only to Zone U and Zone J, and only on October 3. Please do not park in driveways, at hydrants, or in other permit zones.

Getting around

Complimentary Molly’s Trolleys run continuously between check-in and the homes. Show your ticket and hop on. Walking between stops is welcome if you prefer.

Good to know

  • Homes on this tour are not wheelchair accessible

  • Comfortable slip-on shoes are best; many homes ask that shoes be removed

  • Small bags only please

  • Photographs only if the docent or homeowner says yes at that house

  • Children 12 and older are welcome with a ticket and an adult

  • Tickets are non-refundable except if the rare case that a tour is cancelled

  • No dogs permitted on tour

Who presents the tour

The Shadyside House Tour is organized by the Shadyside Community Partnership and the Shadyside Chamber of Commerce.

The 2026 tour is volunteer-led by Shadyside residents. Dani Gundlach is this year’s chair.

A short history

The tour began in 1980, when Shadyside residents with the support of Pittsburgh History & Landmarks Foundation opened private homes as a celebration of the neighborhood’s architecture.

For many years it was organized by the Shadyside Action Coalition. The last tour was held in 2019. After a pause — and after that organization later wound down — the tour returns in 2026 as the 41st edition.

A heartfelt thank-you to Susan and Carol McGinty, who chaired this event with grace and extraordinary commitment for more than 20 years.

Where proceeds go

Ticket sales support streetscape improvements, landscaping, and placemaking projects that keep Shadyside vibrant, walkable, and beautiful for all.
